Huisinis

The walk from Huisnis is a circular walk that takes in 3 beaches - Hùisinis at the start, the stunning and secluded sweep of Tràigh Mheilein overlooking Scarp, and Crabhadail, surrounded by the Harris mountains.

The road to Huisinis is 15 miles of single track. It’s an adventure in itself, passing through some spectacular scenery and through the grounds of Amhuinnsuidhe Castle with its manicured lawns and gardens - a complete contrast to the rest of drive.

Huisinis itself is, by Hebridean standards, incredibly busy - mostly with camper vans parked up for overnight stays. The small community obviously think it worthwhile as they have commercialised the car park and built a facilities block.

The walk that I had read about is only 5 miles or so but turned out to be quite tough, particularly when carrying a full camera bag. It’s a circular walk that takes in 3 beaches - Hùisinis at the start, the stunning and secluded sweep of Tràigh Mheilein overlooking Scarp, and Crabhadail, surrounded by the Harris mountains.

Mheilein beach lived up to expectations but, because I’ve been spoilt by so many fabulous beaches over recent weeks, didn’t wow me. Here are some shots of the approach and views from the beach.

The real surprise was when I reached the far end of the beach, where the rocks are absolutely amazing shapes, colours and contours. Unfortunately, the tide was coming in quite quickly and I had little time to do the scene justice. I will return!

The rest of the walk was a bit of a slog through some very soft terrain, followed by quite a steep climb away from the loch and back to the car park. Next time, I’ll walk to the beach and back.

One thing is for sure though, I won’t be overnight parking out there at any time!
