Udal
29 April 2023 · Outer Hebrides, Scotland

Udal is a quiet and peaceful peninsula on North Uist. I had a very enjoyable walk here with some points of great interest.
Udal is a nature reserve located on North Uist. This is a very easy but beautiful and tranquil walk around the Udal peninsula taking in several beaches, including the ‘Inland Sea’ at Traigh Ear - a vast expanse of sand bordered by farmland and grazing cows.
As I followed the edge of the dunes, I came to an amazing rocky beach with some of the most beautiful coloured and shaped rocks I have seen.
Leaving the main beach and following the track around the tip of peninsula I came to the The Maclean cemetery where several members of the family are buried. If I were to choose where to be buried, this would be high on the list!
Leaving the cemetery I came across a bench where I was able to sit and take in the wonderful views across to Boreray (there are several islands named Boreray in the Hebrides) and the hills of Harris and Lewis.
Continuing on to the trig point, the beach Traigh Udal comes into view - possibly the most perfect beach I’ve seen on this trip. A steep drop down through the dunes allows a very nice walk to the beach before rejoining the farm track for a while before veering to the right to walk along the long, lovely beach Traigh Iar. From there, a steep climb back through the dunes and back to the car.
A lovely afternoon, and a place that I’ll definitely visit again - with a camping chair, to enjoy the quiet beauty of the place.
